Short description

RRR is an Indian action drama set in the 1920s during British colonial rule. It centres on two men who meet by chance and form a deep friendship without knowing each other's real identity or purpose. Komaram Bheem, a Gond warrior, has come to the city to find a young girl from his tribe who was taken by the British governor. Alluri Sitarama Raju is an officer serving the colonial administration, and he takes on the task of tracking Bheem down. Their bond is genuine, but the goals that brought them together pull them toward an inevitable confrontation.

The film is directed by S. S. Rajamouli, who also wrote the screenplay, and it followed his two-part Baahubali epic. N.T. Rama Rao Jr. plays Bheem and Ram Charan plays Raju, with Olivia Morris, Ray Stevenson, Alison Doody and Ajay Devgn in supporting roles. It was produced by DVV Danayya for DVV Entertainment, with Pen Studios and Lyca Productions also involved. Made on a budget of about 69 million dollars, it took roughly 167 million dollars worldwide, a strong return that placed it among the most widely seen Indian films of its year.

On IMDb it holds 7.8 out of 10 from around 160,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.7 from about 1,700 votes. A critics' rating of 8.3 from 103 reviews is higher than both audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The two main characters are based on real historical figures, revolutionary leaders of the movement for the liberation of India from British rule – Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem, but in reality, they never met.
  • The abbreviation RRR was not the original title of the film; it represents the first letters of the director's name (Rajamouli) and the names of the two lead actors (Ram and Rao), and that's how the film, still in pre-production, was presented to the public. But fans and distributors liked the name so much that they decided to keep it. A competition was then announced for the best interpretations in different languages, as the film was dubbed into five languages in India alone. For international distribution, RRR was deciphered as Rise Roar Revolt, which can be translated as “Rise, Roar, Revolt”.
  • S.S. Rajamouli named Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds" as one of the sources of inspiration for the creation of the film.
  • The dance scene to the song "Naatu, Naatu" was filmed in 18 takes; the director strived for perfect synchronicity from the lead actors.
  • For the role, Alia Bhatt learned Telugu.
  • Filming took place from November 11, 2018, to August 26, 2021.
  • At the time of production, it was the most expensive Indian film.
