Freedomfighters

Set during the start of the Spanish Civil War, this historical drama follows Maria, a nun who flees her convent and finds temporary shelter in a brothel. After the establishment is liberated by a group of anarchist women, Maria joins their cause and eventually travels to the front lines. The narrative focuses on these female combatants as they fight against nationalist forces while simultaneously resisting efforts by left-wing factions to impose a traditional military hierarchy upon them.

The film was directed by Vicente Aranda, appearing after his 1980 work Girl with the Golden Panties and before his 2003 production Carmen. Aranda also co-wrote the screenplay with Antonio Rabinad. The movie features a cast including Ariadna Gil as Maria, Victoria Abril as Floren, and Ana Belén as Pilar, along with Blanca Apilánez, Laura Mañá, and Loles León. A total of 70 actors are credited in the production, which was a joint effort between Belgium, Spain, and Italy.
