The Apocalypse

Set in 90 AD, this drama follows John, the last surviving disciple of Jesus, during his imprisonment in a Roman penal colony on the island of Patmos. While Emperor Domitian claims divinity and persecutes Christians who refuse to recognize him as a god, John experiences apocalyptic visions regarding the end of the world and the hope of redemption. A young Christian woman named Irene infiltrates the colony to meet John and help distribute his written revelations to various churches in Asia Minor. Her mission is complicated by the fact that her lover, Valerius, is the son of a Roman commander tasked with tracking John.

The film was directed by Raffaele Mertes, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Gianmario Pagano and Francesco Contaldo. This project follows his previous works, Esther and Joseph of Nazareth, and precedes his 2025 film Din Don 9: Paesani spaesati. The production was a multi-national effort involving companies from Italy, Germany, and the United States, among others. The cast features Richard Harris as John, alongside Vittoria Belvedere, Benjamin Sadler, Christian Kohlund, Erol Sander, and Ian Duncan. On TMDB, the movie has a rating of 5.5/10 based on 35 votes.
