Set in 16th-century France, this historical drama follows the life of Henry of Navarre during a violent conflict between Catholics and Protestants. To bring peace to the warring factions, Catherine de Medici arranges a marriage between Henry and her daughter, Margot. The wedding leads to the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre, a brutal slaughter of Protestants. To survive, Henry converts to Catholicism and spends four years as a prisoner at the French court. After escaping, he navigates political intrigues and repeatedly changes his faith in a tactical struggle to claim the throne and establish a more humanist approach to leadership.
The film was directed by Jo Baier, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Cooky Ziesche. Within his filmography, this project followed Operation Valkyrie and Not All Were Murderers. The cast features Julien Boisselier in the title role, alongside Armelle Deutsch as Marguerite de Valois and Chloé Stefani as Gabrielle d'Estrées. A European co-production involving companies from Germany, Austria, Spain, and France, the movie has a runtime of 155 minutes. On TMDB, it holds a rating of 5.6/10 based on 38 votes.
