The Asadas! centres on Masashi Asada, a young Japanese man devoted to photography since childhood. His parents and older brother once set aside their own ambitions, and Masashi begins staging elaborate family portraits in which each of them takes on a role from a long-held dream, posing as a firefighter, a racing driver or the wife of a gangster. The project turns into a way for the family to revisit the lives they imagined for themselves, and it shapes Masashi's own career behind the camera.
The story shifts after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, when Masashi's work takes on a different purpose. He joins volunteers working to recover family photographs and albums lost when homes were destroyed and to return them to their owners, giving the images he makes a new weight.
Ryota Nakano directed and co-wrote the film with Tomoe Kanno. It followed his 2019 feature A Long Goodbye and was released in Japan in October 2020. Kazunari Ninomiya plays Masashi, with Satoshi Tsumabuki as his brother Yukihiro, Haru Kuroki as Wakana, Masaki Suda as Ono, and Jun Fubuki and Mitsuru Hirata as his parents. The film grossed about 10 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.4/10 from roughly 1,700 votes, and on TMDB 7.3/10 from about 169.
