Max Doyle is an eleven-year-old who loves performing magic tricks, dislikes sports, and cannot get a word out around Traci, the popular girl at his school. When his family moves into a new house, he discovers that he alone can see two young ghosts, Nicky and Tara Roland, who haunt the place. The siblings do not know how they died or where their parents went, and they propose a trade: if Max helps them uncover what happened to their family, they will help him become popular. Their search leads toward a wall in the basement, behind which the malevolent spirit Phears and other entities are lurking.
The film is a family-friendly mix of comedy, fantasy and horror, based on R.L. Stine's book series and released in 2008. Rich Correll directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Pat Proft; it is the second of the three features Correll has directed, arriving between Ski Patrol in 1990 and The Girl Who Believes in Miracles in 2021. Sterling Beaumon plays Max, Madison Pettis and Luke Benward play Tara and Nicky, and Brian Stepanek plays Phears, with David DeLuise and Kim Rhodes as Max's parents.
Made for about 4 million dollars, the film has a modest following rather than a broad one. On IMDb it holds a 4.9 rating from roughly 1,700 voters, while on TMDB it stands at 6.1 from a much smaller group of 58.
