Ordinary Love is a drama about Tom and Joan, a married couple in Ireland who have been together for many years. Their settled life is disrupted when Joan is diagnosed with breast cancer. As she undergoes treatment, the illness forces both of them to confront her mortality and to reconsider what the future may hold. The film follows the pair as they navigate hospitals, medical decisions and the strain the diagnosis places on their relationship, while their long-standing trust and affection are tested in unfamiliar ways.
The film was directed by Lisa Barros D'Sa and Glenn Leyburn, who had previously made Cherrybomb in 2009 and Good Vibrations in 2012. Ordinary Love, their third feature, was written by Owen McCafferty and produced by David Holmes, Piers Tempest and Brian J. Falconer. Liam Neeson plays Tom and Lesley Manville plays Joan, with supporting roles for David Wilmot, Amit Shah, Lalor Roddy and Stella McCusker. It runs 92 minutes and was released in December 2019.
Audience responses are moderate: it holds a 6.6 rating on IMDb from around 5,700 votes and a 6.8 on TMDB from a much smaller group of 163 votes. A film critics' rating of 7.6 from 109 reviews is noticeably higher than either audience score, suggesting that reviewers responded more warmly to the film than general viewers did.
