5 Fingers

Set in neutral Turkey during the Second World War, 5 Fingers follows Ulysses Diello, the valet to the British ambassador in Ankara. Tired of his position in service, Diello secretly photographs classified documents belonging to his employer and offers them to the German embassy, negotiating a large payment for his betrayal. He builds his scheme around the code name Cicero, and he involves a Polish countess, Anna Staviska, a refugee he hopes will share the new life he plans to finance with the money. The arrangement is risky on every side, since the secrets he sells are valuable to the Germans, dangerous to the Allies, and damaging to him if discovered.

Joseph L. Mankiewicz directed the film, the sixth of the fourteen features listed for him, arriving between No Way Out and Julius Caesar. Michael Wilson wrote the screenplay, and Otto Lang produced it for 20th Century Fox. James Mason plays Diello, with Danielle Darrieux as Anna, Michael Rennie as Colin Travers, Walter Hampden as Sir Frederic Taylor, Oskar Karlweis as L. C. Moyzisch and Herbert Berghof as Col. von Richter.

The film holds a rating of 7.6 from around 6,100 votes on IMDb and 7.5 from roughly 105 votes on TMDB, while a critics' rating of 8 out of 10 comes from seven reviews. Audience response and critical assessment therefore sit close together, both indicating a well-regarded wartime drama.
