Nevada Smith

Max Sand is the son of a Native American mother and a white father living in California during the gold rush. When three gunmen murder his parents, the young man sets out to track down each of the killers in turn and take revenge. Aware that he lacks the skills to face them, he learns to handle a gun from a weapons trader he meets along the way, and he adopts the name Nevada Smith as he pursues the men across the West. A priest he encounters tries to turn him from his course.

Henry Hathaway directed and produced the film, working from a screenplay by John Michael Hayes. It was adapted from Harold Robbins's novel The Carpetbaggers, which had already been brought to the screen in 1964. It was Hathaway's sixteenth film as director in chronological order, following The Sons of Katie Elder and preceding True Grit. Steve McQueen plays Max Sand, with Karl Malden, Brian Keith, Arthur Kennedy, Suzanne Pleshette and Raf Vallone among the cast of thirty-eight credited performers.

Paramount and Solar Productions released the western in June 1966, and it runs 128 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.9 from around 9,800 votes, and on TMDB 6.7 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 6.1 from eight reviews sits a little below both audience scores.
