Megalopolis is set in New Rome, a version of New York imagined through the lens of Roman history. At its centre is Cesar Catilina, an architect and artist who can stop time and who wants to push the city toward a utopian future built with a material of his own invention. He is opposed by Mayor Franklyn Cicero, who is committed to a regressive status quo and the entrenched interests that sustain it. Caught between the two men is the mayor's daughter Julia, a socialite whose love for Cesar pulls against her loyalty to her father and forces her to weigh what she believes humanity deserves.
Francis Ford Coppola wrote, directed and produced the film, the twenty-sixth directed feature of his career in chronological order, following The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone in 2020. Adam Driver plays Cesar Catilina, with Giancarlo Esposito as Mayor Cicero and Nathalie Emmanuel as Julia Cicero. Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf and Jon Voight appear among the principal cast, and the production credits 58 cast members and 378 crew.
The film was made for a budget of 120 million USD and returned 14 million USD worldwide. It holds an IMDb rating of 4.7 from around 42,000 votes and a TMDB rating of 5.2 from just over a thousand votes, against a critics' score of 4.8 from 303 reviews, so audiences and critics alike registered a lukewarm response.
