Respect

Respect follows Aretha Franklin from her childhood in her father's church choir to her rise as an internationally known soul singer. Raised by the Reverend C. L. Franklin, a prominent civil rights activist, she carries the difficulties of her early life with her as her career develops, and her path to success involves both personal and professional struggles. The film, a biographical drama, was directed by Liesl Tommy from a screenplay by Tracey Scott Wilson.

Jennifer Hudson plays Franklin, with Forest Whitaker as C. L. Franklin, Marlon Wayans as Ted White, Audra McDonald as Barbara Franklin, Mary J. Blige as Dinah Washington and Marc Maron as Jerry Wexler. The production had a budget of 55 million US dollars and took about 33 million US dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.6 from around 19,000 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 6.8 from roughly 487 votes. A critics' rating of 6.3 from 191 reviews places it somewhat below the audience scores.
