Mona Gray, a solitary young woman, retreated into mathematics as a child after her father fell seriously ill. Now in her early twenties, she teaches the subject at an elementary school, where her own difficulties leave her unprepared for the problems her students bring to her. A man who teaches at the same school takes an interest in her, drawing her out of the isolation she has kept around herself. The film is based on Aimee Bender's novel of the same name.
Jessica Alba leads the cast as Mona, with Bailee Madison playing the character as a child, J.K. Simmons as Mr. Jones, Chris Messina as Ben Smith, and Sônia Braga and John Shea as her parents. Marilyn Agrelo directed, working from a screenplay by Pamela Falk and Michael Ellis; Ellis also produced alongside Jana Edelbaum and Falk. The film runs 96 minutes and mixes drama, comedy, family and romance.
Released in 2010, the film drew limited enthusiasm. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.3 from around 4,500 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.2 from 119 votes. A critics' score of 3.1 from 15 reviews places it well below even those modest audience figures.
