Patrick Donovan, an American art appraiser, travels to Venice to verify the authenticity of three paintings at the Galleria dell'Accademia. Before he can complete his evaluation of the painting La Tempesta, the artwork is stolen during a robbery. As he attempts to recover the missing piece, Donovan finds himself suspected by the police and caught in a complex web of forgery, betrayal, and murder. He seeks help from various figures, including the daughter of the museum director and a powerful dealer, to uncover the truth.
