On a Magical Night

After twenty years of marriage, Maria leaves her husband and moves into room 212 of a hotel directly across the street. From there she can look down on the apartment she shared with him and on the life she has walked away from. Over a single evening she weighs whether she made the right choice, while a stream of people from her past and present offer her their views on the matter, whether she wants them or not.

Christophe Honoré wrote and directed this French, Belgian and Luxembourg co-production, which runs 88 minutes. It is his sixth feature, arriving after Sorry Angel and before Guermantes. Chiara Mastroianni plays Maria, with Vincent Lacoste and Benjamin Biolay as her husband at two different ages, Camille Cottin, Stéphane Roger and Harrison Arevalo among the 25 credited cast members.

Released in October 2019, the film took in about 3 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6 out of 10 from roughly 2,500 votes, and on TMDB 6.2 out of 10 from about 260 votes. A critics' rating of 6.3 out of 10 from 31 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
