The Father
Short description
The Father centres on Anthony, an elderly man living alone in his London flat who insists he needs no help. His daughter Anne disagrees, and her plan to move to Paris sharpens the question of how he will manage without her. As Anne tries to arrange care for him, Anthony's surroundings stop behaving reliably: a stranger appears in his home, familiar faces change, and objects he values go missing. He struggles to hold on to a coherent account of his life while his grasp of events slips further away.
Florian Zeller directed the film from a screenplay he wrote with Christopher Hampton. It was Zeller's first feature as director, followed by The Son in 2022 and Bunker in 2026. Anthony Hopkins plays Anthony, with Olivia Colman as Anne; Mark Gatiss, Olivia Williams, Imogen Poots and Rufus Sewell also appear. It was produced by David Parfitt, Philippe Carcassonne and Jean-Louis Livi, and made on a budget of about 6 million US dollars, going on to take roughly 23 million worldwide.
On IMDb the film holds 8.2 out of 10 from around 242,000 votes, and on TMDB 8.1 out of 10 from a much smaller number of votes. A film critics' rating stands at 8.7 out of 10 from 298 reviews, higher than either audience figure.
