The Eyes of Tammy Faye follows televangelists Tammy Faye and Jim Bakker, who came from modest backgrounds and built a religious broadcasting empire together. Their Christian television programme brought them national fame and funded ambitious ventures, including a theme park. Tammy Faye became known for her outspoken style, her striking make-up and eyelashes, and a message centred on love and acceptance that reached people across social divides. Behind the scenes, financial troubles, rivalries and scandals mounted, and the empire they had constructed began to collapse.
Michael Showalter directed the film, which he made between The Lovebirds and Spoiler Alert, continuing a run of features that began with Hello, My Name Is Doris. Abe Sylvia wrote the screenplay, and Jessica Chastain plays Tammy Faye Bakker opposite Andrew Garfield as Jim Bakker. Cherry Jones, Vincent D'Onofrio, Mark Wystrach and Sam Jaeger appear in supporting roles, with 53 credited cast members and 157 credited crew.
Released in September 2021, the film runs 126 minutes. Its worldwide box office of about 3 million USD is modest by studio standards. Audience responses were moderate and closely matched: it holds 6.6/10 on IMDb from roughly 58,000 votes and 6.4/10 on TMDB from just over 700 votes. A critics' rating of 6.6/10 from 254 reviews places it in similar territory to the audience scores.
