Short description
Trish, a young American journalist, is stranded in Nicaragua with her passport confiscated and political tensions rising around elections. In a hotel bar she meets Daniel, an English traveller who seems to offer a way out of the country. What begins as a romance draws her into a world of secrets and conspiracies, and she comes to understand that Daniel may place her in greater danger than the situation she is trying to leave. The film is based on Denis Johnson's novel.
Claire Denis directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Andrew Litvack and Léa Mysius. It is the twelfth of the fifteen films she has directed, following High Life and preceding Both Sides of the Blade. Margaret Qualley plays Trish and Joe Alwyn plays Daniel, with Benny Safdie, Danny Ramirez, Nick Romano and Stephan Proaño among the credited cast of thirty-three. Olivier Delbosc produced the French production, which runs 138 minutes across crime, drama, romance and thriller.
Audience response has been modest: on IMDb it holds 5.5 out of 10 from roughly 4,800 votes, and on TMDB 5.8 out of 10 from about 146 votes. A critics' rating of 6 out of 10 from 110 reviews places critical opinion slightly above the two audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, Robert Pattinson was supposed to star alongside Margaret Qualley and play the lead role, however, he had to leave the project due to filming delays on "The Batman" caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Taron Egerton was briefly considered to replace Pattinson, but he also had to drop out due to personal reasons, and ultimately Joe Alwyn took on the role.
