Kit left Vietnam as a small child and has spent most of his life in Britain. Now, after more than thirty years away, he returns to a country he barely remembers, hoping to find a suitable place to scatter his parents' ashes. Moving from Ho Chi Minh City toward Hanoi, he sees the streets and hears the language much as any Western visitor would, with the past and the present refusing to line up neatly. Along the way he reconnects with Lee, a friend from his childhood, and grows close to Lewis, an American whose family history is tied up with the war. The search for a resting place for his parents gradually becomes a search for his own sense of belonging.
Hong Khaou wrote and directed the film, his second feature after Lilting (2014), with Tracy O'Riordan producing. Henry Golding plays Kit, heading a cast that also includes Parker Sawyers, David Tran, Molly Harris, Ho Nhi and Phan Bao Ngoc. The film comes from a British production backed by BBC Film, the BFI, Moonspun Films and Sharp House.
Monsoon runs eighty-five minutes and mixes drama with romance. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6 out of 10 from around 2,500 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.4 out of 10 from a much smaller group of users. A critics' rating of 7.1 out of 10 from sixty-two reviews is noticeably higher than the audience scores.
