The Survivor

The Survivor follows Harry Haft, a boxer who was forced to fight other prisoners in concentration camps during the Second World War in order to stay alive. Now living in New York after the war, he struggles to make a living in the ring while carrying the memories of what he endured and a sense of guilt he cannot shake. Convinced that his first love, Leah, also survived and reached the United States, he sets out to find her. His plan is to draw enough publicity to be noticed by taking a fight against the heavyweight contender Rocky Marciano, while a journalist and a woman named Miriam Wofsoniker become involved in his search and in the telling of his story.

Barry Levinson directed the film, the twenty-seventh of the twenty-eight features he has directed to date, following Paterno and preceding The Alto Knights. Justine Juel Gillmer wrote the screenplay, and Levinson produced with Scott Pardo and Aaron L. Gilbert. Ben Foster plays Harry Haft, with Billy Magnussen, Vicky Krieps, Peter Sarsgaard, Saro Emirze and Danny DeVito among the cast. The production, a Canadian-American one, runs 129 minutes and blends action, drama and history.

On IMDb the film holds 6.7 out of 10 from around 7,200 votes, and on TMDB it stands at 6.8 from roughly 211 votes, indicating a moderate response from viewers rather than a strongly divided one.
