Short description
Men in Black II continues the story of the secret agency that polices alien life on Earth. Four years after the events of the first film, Agent Jay still works for the organization, while his former partner Kay has had his memory erased and now lives an ordinary life. When Serleena, an alien who has taken the form of a lingerie model, arrives on Earth with plans that threaten the planet, Jay must track Kay down and persuade him to return, despite Kay remembering nothing of his time as an agent.
Barry Sonnenfeld directed the film, his seventh feature and a return to the series after Men in Black (1997), with Wild Wild West in between. Barry Fanaro and Robert Gordon wrote the screenplay, and Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald produced. Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith reprise their roles as Kay and Jay, joined by Rip Torn as Zed, Lara Flynn Boyle as Serleena, Johnny Knoxville as Scrad and Charlie, and Rosario Dawson as Laura Vasquez.
Released in 2002, the film cost about 140 million USD and took roughly 445 million USD worldwide, a strong return though below the first installment's performance. On IMDb it holds 6.2/10 from 430,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.4/10 from 10,905 votes, while critics gave it 5.3/10 from 196 reviews, a lower figure than either audience score. It runs 88 minutes.
What's left behind the scenes
- In the scene where Jay and Kay communicate with a race of tiny creatures living in a storage room, Kay takes their sacred electronic watch, which stood in the center of the square. To avoid upsetting them, Jay leaves them his own watch. A few seconds of dialogue later, the square with the watches is shown again, and Kay’s watch is still there.
- Will Smith began work on this film immediately after finishing filming the sports drama "Ali." He had gained muscle mass there, so in the first weeks of filming, Sonnenfeld had difficulty fitting into his black suit.
- The film is based on a comic book series by Lowell Cunningham, which was published from 1990 to 1991 by Marvel under its Aircel Comics and Malibu Comics imprints.
- The pug that appeared in the first film of the franchise reprised his role, but he had aged somewhat in the seven years since, and grey hairs on his muzzle had to be applied with makeup.
- In the first part of the film, Jack Gibbs had a squint in his right eye, in the second – in his left.
- Filming began in June 2001 in New York and was completed in October of the same year.
- The final scene of the film originally featured the World Trade Center buildings, but after the tragic events of September 11, 2001, their image was replaced with an image of the Chrysler Building.
- Famke Janssen was supposed to play Serling and even filmed several episodes, but a family tragedy forced her to leave the project.
- The film's ending parodies the ending of the first one, where our galaxy turns out to be just one of many balls in a child's game played by gigantic aliens.
- Barry Sonnenfeld's daughter played the girl at the post office.
- Will Smith's sons and Tommy Lee Jones' daughter appeared in cameo roles, as did stars such as Shaquille O'Neal, Tiger Woods, Venus Williams, and even Michael Jackson.
