Short description

Spice World follows the Spice Girls as they prepare for a live concert at London's Royal Albert Hall, with only a few days to get there. Travelling around the city in a double-decker bus, Mel B, Emma, Mel C, Geri and Victoria move between photo shoots, rehearsals, television appearances and parties while their manager Clifford tries to keep the schedule under control. A tabloid editor named Kevin McMaxford mounts a campaign against the group, and a reporter sets out to catch them in compromising situations, adding to the chaos surrounding the build-up to the show.

The film was directed by Bob Spiers, who also made That Darn Cat the same year. Jamie Curtis and Kim Fuller wrote the screenplay, and the five group members appear as themselves, with Richard E. Grant as Clifford among a credited cast of 53. Made for a budget of 25 million US dollars, it took around 100 million US dollars worldwide, a strong return for a musical comedy built around a pop act.

Audience response was modest: on IMDb it holds 3.8 out of 10 from about 39,000 votes, and on TMDB 4.9 out of 10 from 517 votes. A critics' rating of 4.6 out of 10 from 69 reviews places it slightly below the IMDb figure and close to the TMDB one.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The final scenes contain hints of a future sequel. According to Emma Bunton, these plans were abandoned due to Geri Halliwell's departure.
  • Jason Isaacs appeared in a cameo role in the film, but all of his scenes were cut.
  • A flashback shows that the homeless girls initially live in a small cafe, where they dream of fame and even perform their future hit 'Wannabe' for the owner, who supposedly gave them shelter without asking for anything in return. This entirely fictional scene convinced many fans of the group that this was exactly how the girls started.
  • Roger Moore appeared in a cameo role in the film. He spent only one day filming; like the other actors in cameo roles, Moore had no idea what the movie was or what it was about.
  • The original version of the film contains mentions of Gianni Versace and Princess Diana as if they were still alive. Both subsequently passed away, and corresponding changes had to be made to the film.
