Minari follows a Korean American family that leaves California for rural Arkansas, where the father, Jacob, hopes to build a farm and make a life on his own terms. His wife, Monica, is unsettled by the isolation and the distance from the city, while their children, David and Anne, must adjust to an unfamiliar world. The arrival of Monica's mother, Soonja, from South Korea shifts the household further, bringing her own blunt manner and forms of care into a family already under strain.
Lee Isaac Chung wrote and directed the film, his first feature before Twisters (2024), and it was produced by Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner and Christina Oh for Plan B Entertainment. Steven Yeun and Han Yeri play the parents, with Youn Yuh-jung as Soonja, Will Patton as Paul, and Alan Kim and Noel Kate Cho as the children. The film runs 115 minutes and was released in February 2021.
Made for about 2 million USD, Minari earned roughly 13 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.4/10 from around 125,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.3/10 from a much smaller base of 1,927 votes. A critics' rating of 8.7/10 from 325 reviews places it noticeably above both audience scores.
