Wendy Wu is a popular Chinese-American high school student whose only goal is to be named homecoming queen. Her plans are upended when a young Buddhist monk named Shen arrives and tells her she is the reincarnation of an ancient Chinese warrior. Wendy must train in kung fu to confront a recurring evil spirit that threatens the world, all while juggling her schoolwork, her boyfriend, and the competition for the crown. As she reluctantly takes up the training, her priorities gradually shift.
The film is a Disney Channel television movie directed by John Laing, from a screenplay by Vince Cheung, Lydia Look and Ben Montanio, and produced by Janine Dickins. It stars Brenda Song as Wendy and Shin Koyamada as Shen, alongside Susan Chuang, Justin Chon, Michael David Cheng and Andy Fischer-Price. Made on a budget of roughly six million dollars, it was released in 2006 and runs 91 minutes.
Laing's second feature, released ten years before his later film Abandoned, it is an action-adventure comedy aimed at a family audience. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.4 from around 8,400 votes, while on TMDB it rates 6.2 from roughly 450 votes, suggesting a modest reception from a relatively small viewing audience.
