Jane Chase, a young zoology student, takes a job as an assistant to the eccentric Dr Steven Phillip, a British scientist studying primate intelligence at his isolated house on the coast. The household includes three chimpanzees used in his research and an older orangutan named Link, who greets Jane dressed in butler's clothing. After one of the chimpanzees is found dead and the professor vanishes without explanation, Link turns hostile toward Jane, leaving her alone in the remote house with an animal she can no longer control.
Richard Franklin directed Link, following Cloak & Dagger in his filmography, and also produced it from a screenplay by Everett De Roche. Elisabeth Shue plays Jane and Terence Stamp plays Dr Phillip, with supporting roles filled by Steven Finch, Richard Garnett, David O'Hara and Kevin Lloyd. The film was a British production from Cannon Group and Thorn EMI Screen Entertainment, running 103 minutes.
Released in March 1986, Link earned about 2 million dollars worldwide. Its critical reception was weak, with critics averaging 4.5 out of 10 across 18 reviews, while audiences have been somewhat kinder: it holds 5.9 on IMDb from roughly 4,400 votes and 6.2 on TMDB from a much smaller group of 138 voters.
