Concrete Cowboy

Cole, a fifteen-year-old from Detroit, is expelled from school after a fight, and his mother drives him to Philadelphia and leaves him with the father he barely knows. Settling into his father's home in North Philadelphia, Cole discovers that the man keeps horses, and that he has landed in the middle of an urban horsemanship tradition maintained by a close community of Black cowboys. Drawn between the streets and the stable, Cole has to decide what kind of life he wants. The screenplay by Ricky Staub and Dan Walser draws on Greg Neri's novel Ghetto Cowboy.

Concrete Cowboy is Ricky Staub's first feature as director, and it assembles a cast led by Caleb McLaughlin as Cole and Idris Elba as his father, Harp. Jharrel Jerome, Byron Bowers, Lorraine Toussaint and Method Man appear in supporting roles, and Elba is also credited as a producer alongside Tucker Tooley and Jeff G. Waxman. The film runs 111 minutes and was released in 2020.

Audience response has been moderate: on IMDb it holds 6.3/10 from around 10,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.1/10 from roughly 215 votes. A critics' rating of 6.6/10 from 126 reviews places it slightly above those viewer scores.
