The Last Vermeer

The Last Vermeer is a post-Second World War drama about Joseph Piller, a Dutch resistance veteran who now works tracing art taken during the occupation. His investigation centres on Han van Meegeren, a celebrated artist accused of collaborating with the Nazis, including through the sale of a Vermeer. As the case against van Meegeren builds, Piller becomes increasingly convinced the painter is not guilty, and he is drawn into an effort to save him. The film is based on a true story and on Jonathan Lopez's book about the forger.

Dan Friedkin directed the film, working from a screenplay by John Orloff, Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby. It is a relatively early directing credit for Friedkin, whose career has included work as a producer. Guy Pearce plays van Meegeren and Claes Bang plays Piller, with Vicky Krieps as Minna Holmberg and supporting turns from Roland Møller, August Diehl and Karl Johnson. The production was handled by TriStar Pictures, 30WEST, Sony Pictures Classics and Imperative Entertainment.

Released in 2019, the film runs 118 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.7 from around 6,600 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.5 from roughly 147 votes. A critics' rating of 6.4 from 78 reviews places it slightly below the IMDb audience score and above the smaller TMDB sample, suggesting a modest but not unfavourable response overall.
