Short description
Let Them All Talk follows Alice Hughes, a successful author who sets off on a cruise with two old friends, Susan and Roberta, hoping to enjoy herself and come to terms with events from her past. Her nephew Tyler joins the trip and becomes involved with Karen, a young literary agent who is also on board without Alice's knowledge. Tensions arise among the travellers as the voyage proceeds.
The film is a comedy-drama directed by Steven Soderbergh, the twenty-eighth of the thirty-five films he has directed in chronological order, coming between High Flying Bird and No Sudden Move. Deborah Eisenberg wrote the screenplay, and Gregory Jacobs produced. Meryl Streep plays Alice, with Lucas Hedges as Tyler, Gemma Chan as Karen, Dianne Wiest as Susan, Candice Bergen as Roberta and Daniel Algrant as Kelvin Krantz. Twenty-four cast members and eighty-eight crew members are credited.
Released in December 2020, the film runs 113 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.1 from around 14,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.6 from roughly 300 votes. A critics' rating of 7.1 from 123 reviews places it noticeably higher than either audience score, suggesting reviewers responded more favourably to the film than general viewers did.
What's left behind the scenes
- Steven Soderbergh followed his usual practice and, in addition to directing, also performed the duties of cinematographer (under the pseudonym Peter Andrews) and editor (where he used the pseudonym Mary Ann Bernard).
- Passengers on the cruise liner were unaware that a film was being shot right on board, next to them. Signs were placed around the filming locations to restrict access, but they didn't arouse any particular interest or curiosity among the passengers.
- Despite claims that all the dialogue in the film was the result of improvisation, Steven Soderbergh explained that the film contained key moments that were clearly and precisely written in the script, while other scenes were invented by screenwriter Deborah Eisenberg based on conversations with the actors, but she subsequently rewrote those scenes many times. Overall, Soderbergh estimated that improvisation accounted for 70% of the screen time, while 30% consisted of scripted lines.
