Short description

Prince Valiant is a young squire in King Arthur's court at Camelot, where the legendary sword Excalibur is stolen by Viking raiders. After his father, the king of Scandia, is driven from his throne by the Viking leader Sligon, Valiant sets out to recover the sword and win Arthur's support for restoring his family's rule. He is joined by Princess Ilene, and their journey pits them against Sligon and his brother Thagnar as well as the sorceress Morgan Le Fey, who has schemes of her own. The film draws on Hal Foster's long-running comic strip about the Arthurian-era hero.

Anthony Hickox directed from a screenplay he wrote with Michael Frost Beckner and Carsten H.W. Lorenz, who also produced. It was Hickox's seventh feature, following Payback in 1995 and preceding Blast in 2004. Stephen Moyer plays Valiant and Katherine Heigl plays Ilene, with Thomas Kretschmann as Thagnar, Udo Kier as Sligon, Edward Fox as King Arthur and Joanna Lumley as Morgan Le Fey. The production was an international one, mounted by companies in Germany, the United Kingdom, Ireland and the United States, and it runs 91 minutes.

Audience response has been modest: on IMDb it holds a rating of 5.1 from around 2,600 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 5.2 from roughly 80 votes. Those figures suggest a film that found a small audience and drew middling reactions from it.
