In Bogotá, a young girl named Cataleya watches her parents murdered by associates of a Colombian drug lord. She escapes the attack and makes her way to Chicago, where she is taken in by her uncle Emilio, a figure in organised crime. Years later she has become a professional killer working for him, while secretly pursuing the man responsible for her family's death. Her victims carry a drawn orchid, left as a message meant to draw out the target. Her double life is complicated by a relationship with Danny, a man who has no idea what she does for a living.
Colombiana was directed by Olivier Megaton, released in 2011 and sitting between Transporter 3 and Taken 2 in his filmography. Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen wrote the screenplay, and Besson produced through EuropaCorp, with Canal+, CinéCinéma and TF1 Films Production among the backers. Zoe Saldaña plays the adult Cataleya, with Amandla Stenberg as the character in childhood; Cliff Curtis appears as Emilio, Callum Blue and Lennie James as Richard and Special Agent Ross, and Michael Vartan as Danny.
The film cost around 40 million dollars and took roughly 72 million worldwide, a modest return. Audiences are mixed to mildly positive: on IMDb it holds 6.4 from about 114,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.6 from just under 3,000. Critics were less convinced, with a 4.9 rating across 105 reviews, noticeably below the audience scores.
