Clouds tells the true story of Zach Sobiech, a seventeen-year-old musician whose cancer has spread and who is told he has only months to live. Rather than withdraw, Zach uses the time he has left to write and record music with his best friend Sammy, who composes alongside him. A schoolteacher helps the pair reach a record deal, and the songs they make take on a life of their own, reaching listeners far beyond the people around them. Amy, the girl he loves, and his parents Rob and Laura are part of the year the story follows, which moves through school, friendship, family and first love while Zach builds something he can leave behind.
Justin Baldoni directed the film, his second turn behind the camera following Five Feet Apart in 2019; he also produced it alongside Andrew Lazar and Casey La Scala, from a screenplay by Kara Holden. Fin Argus plays Zach, with Sabrina Carpenter as Sammy, Madison Iseman as Amy, Neve Campbell and Tom Everett Scott as his parents, and Lil Rel Howery as Mr. Weaver.
The film was released in October 2020 and runs 121 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.5 from around 13,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 8.2 from roughly a thousand votes. A critics' rating of 6.8 from 23 reviews places it somewhat below the audience scores.
