Short description

Emily and Randall are college students whose relationship is under strain when they arrive at a beach house belonging to Randall's father for a weekend away. They soon find the house already occupied by Mitch and Jane, an older couple who know Randall's father, and the four spend an evening together. Afterward, strange things begin to happen: the visitors behave oddly, unusual growths appear on the shore, and the surrounding environment shows signs of a mysterious infection. The couple's romantic escape turns into a fight to survive.

Jeffrey A. Brown wrote and directed this American drama, horror and mystery film, the first of the two features he has directed. Liana Liberato and Noah Le Gros play Emily and Randall, with Jake Weber and Maryann Nagel as Mitch and Jane. Sophia Lin, Tyler Davidson and Andrew Corkin produced for Low Spark Films and Uncorked Productions, and the film runs 88 minutes.

On IMDb the film holds a critics' rating of 6.5 out of 10 from 109 reviews, somewhat higher than the audience rating on TMDB, which stands at 5.4 out of 10 from 142 votes. The gap suggests critics responded to the film more favorably than general viewers did.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In the final driving scene, both of Emily's hands (played by Liana Liberato) are visible on the steering wheel when filmed from behind. However, when filmed from the front, it is visible that the character is holding the steering wheel with only one hand, while pressing an oxygen mask to her face with the other.
  • Director Jeffrey A. Brown stated that while writing the screenplay, he drew inspiration from science fiction films—the three adaptations of 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' (based on Jack Finney's 1955 novel), 'Shivers' (David Cronenberg, 1975), 'Like Crazy' (Drake Doremus, 2011), 'The Quatermass Experiment' (Val Guest, 1955), and 'Alien' (Ridley Scott, 1979).
  • The film was shot during the off-season at the Cape Cod residence of the film's producer, Andrew Corkin's father.
  • According to director and screenwriter Jeffrey A. Brown, he wrote the script based on his own trip to Cape Cod, after which he broke up with his girlfriend. Additionally, Brown simply loves 1950s science fiction, which is also reflected in the plot.
