The Forgotten Battle is a Dutch war drama set during the Second World War, centred on the Battle of the Scheldt in the autumn of 1944. Three lives converge amid the fighting: Marinus van Staveren, a Dutchman serving with the German forces; William Sinclair, a British glider pilot taking part in the Allied airborne operation; and Teuntje Visser, a young woman drawn reluctantly into the resistance. Their paths cross as the campaign for control of the Scheldt estuary plays out in the occupied Netherlands.
The film is directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr., his second feature after The Thing (2011), from a screenplay by Paula van der Oest. Gijs Blom, Jamie Flatters, Susan Radder, Theo Barklem-Biggs, Jan Bijvoet and Marthe Schneider lead a large cast, with Alain de Levita producing. It was made as a co-production involving the Netherlands, Belgium, Lithuania and the Netherlands Antilles, on a budget of about 14 million dollars, and it took roughly 6 million dollars worldwide.
On IMDb it holds 7.1 out of 10 from around 41,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.1 out of 10 from about 800 votes. A small set of critics' reviews gives it 8 out of 10, slightly above the audience scores.
