Renato Murguía is a successful Mexican aviation executive with an orderly life and a wedding approaching. A call from the other side of the border changes his plans: he learns he has an American half-brother, Asher, whose existence he never suspected. The two men could hardly be more different, and their sick father sends them on a journey together, retracing the route he once took as a migrant from Mexico to the United States. An old family wound resurfaces along the way.
The film is directed by Luke Greenfield, whose earlier features include The Animal, The Girl Next Door, Something Borrowed and Let's Be Cops; Half Brothers is the fifth of the six films he has directed to date, followed by Playdate. The screenplay is by Jason Shuman and Eduardo Cisneros, who also produced alongside Jason Benoit. Luis Gerardo Méndez plays Renato and Connor Del Rio plays Asher, with José Zúñiga, Vincent Spano, Alma Sisneros and Shira Scott Astrof among the credited cast of thirty-three.
Released in December 2020, the comedy-drama runs 96 minutes and was produced by companies including Focus Features, with Mexico and the United States among its countries of production. Its worldwide box office reached about 3 million USD. On IMDb it holds 6.2/10 from roughly 4,600 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.2/10 from 223 votes, a small sample that rates the film more warmly than the larger IMDb group does.
