Dinner in America follows Simon, a punk rocker on the run from the police, and Patty, a young woman living in a Midwestern suburb who is fixated on his band. Their accidental meeting gives Simon a place to hide, though Patty does not initially realize she has crossed paths with the masked singer she admires. As the two outsiders spend time together, they discover they share more than either expected, and their involvement turns into a journey through the run-down outskirts of the American Midwest.
Adam Rehmeier wrote and directed the film, which was released in 2020 and runs 108 minutes. It blends comedy, drama, music and romance, and was produced by Red Hour, Burn Later Productions, High Frequency Entertainment and PSH Collective, with Ben Stiller, Nicholas Weinstock and Sam Slater among the producers. Kyle Gallner plays Simon and Emily Skeggs plays Patty, while Pat Healy, Griffin Gluck, Lea Thompson and Mary Lynn Rajskub appear in supporting roles.
The film sits at the start of Rehmeier's directing career, ahead of Snack Shack and Carolina Caroline. It earned an IMDb rating of 7.5 from around 16,000 votes and a TMDB rating of 7.7 from 282 votes, while critics gave it 7.9 from 76 reviews, a warmer critical response than the audience scores suggest.
