Devotion is a war drama set during the Korean War, centred on two US Navy fighter pilots whose friendship is tested by the demands of combat. Jesse Brown becomes the first African American aviator to fly in combat for the Navy, while Tom Hudner comes from a background of privilege and turns down a place at Harvard to enlist. Both are assigned to the same fighter squadron and train to fly together, forming a close bond that later faces its hardest trial when one of their aircraft goes down over enemy-held ground.
The film is based on a true story and on the book of the same name, and it was directed by J.D. Dillard, following his 2019 feature Sweetheart. Jonathan Majors plays Jesse Brown and Glen Powell plays Thomas J. Hudner Jr., with Christina Jackson, Thomas Sadoski, Daren Kagasoff and Joe Jonas among the supporting cast. The screenplay was written by Jake Crane and Jonathan Stewart, and the production involved 56 credited cast members and 68 credited crew.
Released in November 2022, the film runs 139 minutes. It carried a budget of 90 million US dollars and took about 22 million dollars worldwide, a return well below its cost. On IMDb it holds 6.6 out of 10 from roughly 32,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.1 from around 857 votes. A critics' rating of 6.7 from 126 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
