The Peacemaker
Short description
Two trains collide in a remote part of Russia, one carrying passengers and the other a shipment of nuclear warheads being moved for dismantling. The crash triggers a nuclear explosion, and in the confusion nine of the ten warheads on board disappear. The theft draws attention in both Moscow and Washington, and a search gets under way before the stolen material can be sold or used.
Dr. Julia Kelly, an American nuclear specialist, works out that the collision was staged to hide the theft. She is paired with Lt. Col. Thomas Devoe, a Special Forces officer, and together they trace the missing warheads from Russia toward a buyer abroad, against a group that has its own plans for the material.
Mimi Leder directed the film, the second of the six features listed for her and her first after Nightingales. Michael Schiffer and Kevin Bernhardt wrote the screenplay, and Branko Lustig and Walter F. Parkes produced it for DreamWorks Pictures. George Clooney plays Devoe and Nicole Kidman plays Kelly, with Marcel Iureș, Aleksandr Baluev, Rene Medvešek and Armin Mueller-Stahl in supporting roles. Made for about 50 million dollars, it took roughly 110 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6 out of 10 from around 66,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.1 out of 10 from about 1,160 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 5.9 out of 10 from 41 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- For the role in this film, George Clooney had to learn how to descend from a helicopter hovering above the ground using a rope.
- Mimi Leder became the director because executive producer Steven Spielberg liked her work on the series "ER" (1994-2009).

- When 3 helicopters cross the border of the Russian Federation, the launch consoles of Russian missileers display the inscriptions: in one frame, “POWER” (obviously a translation of the word 'power'), in another — “VEYAH/VNNZ” and “V’INOSNII POST CHPRAVLENIYA”. The Russian inscriptions on the sacks and boxes in the truck (“Sugar” and “Medications”) are written without errors.
- The filmmakers scouted several churches looking for one suitable for filming. Several were selected, but when parishioners learned that a film featuring terrorists would be shot there, they began to object, as they did not want their church to be associated with terrorism (even in this way). As a result, the church had to be created using computer technology.
