Malina

Malina follows a woman living in Vienna who shares her apartment with a man named Malina. She begins an affair with Ivan and becomes deeply attached to him, but her feelings are far more intense than anything he can understand or return. The relationship unfolds against the backdrop of her life as a writer, and the film traces the emotional triangle that forms among the three of them. The story is based on Ingeborg Bachmann's novel, with a screenplay by Elfriede Jelinek and Patricia Moraz.

Werner Schroeter directed the film, which was released in 1991 and runs 125 minutes. It is a German-Austrian co-production from Kuchenreuther Filmproduktion and Neue Studio Film, produced by Steffen, Thomas Kuchenreuther and Peter Pochlatko. Isabelle Huppert plays the woman, with Mathieu Carrière as Malina and Can Togay as Ivan. Fritz Schediwy, Isolde Barth and Libgart Schwarz appear in supporting roles.

On TMDB, the film holds a rating of 6.2 out of 10 from 38 votes, indicating a modest response from the users who have logged it. The film sits within Schroeter's body of work from that period, made after his earlier features and starring Huppert at a time when she was appearing in productions across Europe.
