Mr. Vampire II follows a group of unscrupulous relic hunters who discover the perfectly preserved bodies of a man, a woman and their child in a hidden cave. What they do not realise is that these are vampires, held motionless only by paper charms stuck to their foreheads. When the bodies are transported for sale, the child's charm comes loose and the vampire child escapes, befriending local children, while the parents eventually wake and flee as well. A pharmacist named Lam Ching-Ying, aided by his daughter's fiancé, sets out to track the vampires down. The film is a Hong Kong action comedy horror directed by Ricky Lau, who had launched the series with Mr. Vampire in 1985 and returned for this second entry before going on to make several more films in the franchise, including Mr. Vampire III in 1987, Mr Vampire Saga 4 in 1988 and Mr Vampire 1992. Barry Wong wrote the screenplay, and Sammo Hung and Corey Yuen produced.
Lam Ching-Ying again plays the Taoist priest figure he made his own in the series, while Yuen Biao stars as Yen and Moon Lee appears as Gigi. Billy Lau, Paul Chung Fat and Ka Lee are among the twenty-eight credited cast members. The film runs eighty-nine minutes and was released in Hong Kong in August 1986.
On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.8 from around 1,100 votes, and on TMDB it scores 5.9 from a much smaller base of about 50 votes. The two figures sit close together, suggesting a steady, modest level of approval from viewers rather than strong enthusiasm.
