Sound of Freedom follows Tim Ballard, a United States government agent who works cases involving child trafficking. After rescuing a young boy in Honduras, he learns the boy's sister is still being held by the traffickers. Frustrated by the limits of his official role, Ballard resigns and pursues the girl himself, traveling into the Colombian jungle, where the people holding her resist his efforts to bring her out.
The film is directed by Alejandro Gómez Monteverde, who wrote the screenplay with Rod Barr. It is the second of four features he directed, between Little Boy and Cabrini, and it comes before Zero A.D. Jim Caviezel plays Ballard, with Mira Sorvino as Katherine Ballard and supporting turns from Bill Camp, Gerardo Taracena, Kurt Fuller and José Zúñiga, among a credited cast of 29. Eduardo Verástegui and Lukas Behnken produced, and Santa Fe Films was the production company. The story draws on the experiences of the real Tim Ballard.
Made for a budget of 15 million US dollars, the film took about 251 million dollars worldwide, a return far beyond its cost. Audiences responded strongly: it holds 7.6 out of 10 on IMDb from around 136,000 votes and 8 out of 10 on TMDB from roughly 2,849 votes. The critics' rating stands at 5.9 out of 10 from 80 reviews, well below the viewer scores.
