Escape from Planet Earth
Short description
Escape from Planet Earth is an animated adventure set on the planet Baab, where the celebrated astronaut Scorch Supernova carries out daring rescues with the help of his brother Gary, the careful mission-control chief at the BASA space agency. When a distress signal arrives from a world known for being dangerous, Scorch ignores Gary's warnings and sets off, only to be captured. Gary must then step out from behind his console and take on the rescue himself.
The film was released in 2013 and runs 89 minutes. It was directed by Cal Brunker, who wrote the screenplay with Bob Barlen and made his feature directing debut here, ahead of later animated features including The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature, PAW Patrol: The Movie, PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie and PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie. The voice cast includes Brendan Fraser as Scorch, Rob Corddry as Gary, Jessica Alba, Steve Zahn, Sarah Jessica Parker and Ricky Gervais.
Produced in Canada and the United States on a budget of 40 million USD, the film took about 75 million USD worldwide. Audiences have been lukewarm: it holds 5.8 out of 10 on IMDb from 28,000 votes and 5.8 out of 10 on TMDB from 844 votes, while a film critics' rating of 4.7 out of 10 from 40 reviews puts professional response below the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- This is the first film from Rainmaker Entertainment to be released in theaters, and also the first film from the studio shot in 3D.
- Whenever two characters’ last names are said in succession in the film, they match the names of famous directors, for example: “Peter! Jackson! Detain him!” or “James! Cameron! Don’t let him go!”
- In the cartoon, planet Earth is called a class “M” planet—a reference to the series “Star Trek” (1966-1969). The cartoon also uses a Vulcan greeting.
- When the General destroys Halley's Comet, it has a long tail. The tail could only appear when close to the Sun, and not at a distance of '50 years from Earth,' as the General claims.
