Longitude

Longitude tells two stories separated by more than two centuries. In eighteenth-century England, the clockmaker John Harrison works to build a timepiece that can keep accurate time at sea, a problem whose solution would allow sailors to determine their position and prevent ships from being lost. In the twentieth century, the scholar Rupert Gould becomes consumed by the task of restoring Harrison's surviving timekeepers, which have fallen into disrepair.

The film is directed by Charles Sturridge, who also wrote the screenplay, and it was produced by Selwyn Roberts for Granada Productions and A+E Studios. It followed Aria, which Sturridge directed in 1987, and preceded Lassie in 2005. Michael Gambon plays John Harrison, with Jeremy Irons as Rupert Gould. The cast also includes Ian Hart, Andrew Scott, Bill Nighy and Gemma Jones, among 38 credited performers. Running 198 minutes, it is a British television drama made for broadcast.
