Adiós, Sabata

Set in Mexico in 1867, during the uprising led by Benito Juárez against the troops of Emperor Maximilian, the film follows a group of revolutionaries who plan to seize a shipment of Austrian gold to pay for weapons. To pull off the robbery they hire a skilled gunman, Sabata, who is known by the name Indio Black. A scheming colonel named Skimmel has his own designs on the gold, and a self-interested American adventurer, Ballantine, joins the enterprise for reasons of his own. The robbery sets off a contest over the fortune among the revolutionaries, the colonel and the bandits circling the same prize.

Gianfranco Parolini directed and co-wrote the screenplay, the fourth of the five features credited to him here, following Sabata (1969) and arriving a year before Return of Sabata (1971). Yul Brynner plays Sabata, Dean Reed appears as Ballantine, Ignazio Spalla is Escudo, and Gérard Herter plays Colonel Skimmel, with Salvatore Borgese and Franco Fantasia in supporting roles. The Spanish-Italian production was made by PEA with United Artists involved, and runs 105 minutes.

On IMDb the film holds a 5.9 rating from roughly 2,600 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.3 from a much smaller base of 81 votes. Both figures point to a modest, settled standing among viewers of the genre rather than a widely admired entry. It remains part of the cycle of European westerns produced around the turn of the 1970s.
