The Phantom of the Open

Maurice Flitcroft is a crane operator at a shipyard in a small English town whose job is under threat as the local economy wobbles. After watching a golf match on television, he becomes taken with the game and sets his sights on the British Open. The problem is that he has never played golf in his life, which does not stop him from entering the 1976 championship and turning in the worst round in the tournament's history. Rather than being shamed, he wins over the public and becomes a folk hero.

The Phantom of the Open is a British comedy drama directed by Craig Roberts, following his 2020 film Eternal Beauty. Simon Farnaby and Scott Murray wrote the screenplay, and Mark Rylance plays Maurice, with Sally Hawkins as his wife Jean. Jonah Lees, Christian Lees, Jake Davies and Mark Lewis Jones appear among the forty credited cast members.

The film was released in March 2022 and runs 106 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from around 9,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.8 out of 10 from 136 votes. The much larger vote count on IMDb, with a slightly higher average, suggests a widely seen film that has landed well with general audiences.
