Short description
Licorice Pizza is set in California's San Fernando Valley in 1973, where fifteen-year-old Gary Valentine meets Alana Kane on school picture day. Gary, already a working actor, is confident beyond his years; Alana, in her mid-twenties, is still trying to work out what to do with her life. She is amused by him, and the two begin spending time together. What follows is a connection that keeps shifting shape as they move through first dates, auditions, odd jobs and half-formed business schemes, crossing paths with adults whose attention changes their plans. The gap in their ages sits at the centre of the film, and neither of them seems able to settle what they mean to each other or what they want to be.
Paul Thomas Anderson wrote, directed and produced the film, his twelfth feature in chronological order, following Anima and preceding Wall of Eyes: On Film. Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman lead the cast, with Sean Penn, Tom Waits, Bradley Cooper and Benny Safdie in supporting roles. Production involved Bron Studios, Focus Features, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Ghoulardi Film Company, with 197 credited cast members and 265 credited crew.
Released in November 2021, the film runs 133 minutes. Against a budget of about 40 million dollars, it took in roughly 33 million worldwide at the box office, a modest return.
