The Five-Year Engagement
Short description
Tom Solomon, a chef in San Francisco, meets Violet Barnes at a New Year's Eve party, and a year later he proposes. The couple seem made for each other, but the walk to the altar keeps stretching out. Work takes them from California to Michigan, where Violet pursues her studies and Tom's own career stalls, while families, exes, an ever-changing guest list and other complications pile up. Months turn into years as the two keep postponing the wedding they both say they want.
Nicholas Stoller directed and co-wrote the film with Jason Segel, and Judd Apatow produced it. It was Stoller's third feature as director, following Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek. Segel and Emily Blunt play the leads, with Rhys Ifans, Chris Pratt, Alison Brie and Jacki Weaver in supporting roles. The production had a budget of about 30 million dollars and took in roughly 54 million worldwide.
On IMDb the film holds a 6.2 rating from more than 101,000 votes, and on TMDB it sits at 5.8 from a much smaller number of votes, so the two audience scores are close. A critics' rating of 6.2 from 179 reviews places professional opinion in the same middle range as the general audience response.
What's left behind the scenes
- When Violet leaves the church after the funeral in England, she has a haircut with bangs (the same as when she was with Winton). When she returns to the US with Tom, the bangs are gone.
- In early trailers for the film, just before Emily Blunt is shot in the leg with a crossbow, a little girl can be heard saying, "I am Pocahontas." In later trailers, to play on expectations and the success of "The Hunger Games" (2012), this line was changed to "I am Katniss."
- Jason Segel and Emily Blunt had previously played a couple in "Gulliver's Travels" (2010) and also appeared in "The Muppets" (2011).
- To develop a British accent for the role of Suzie, Allison Brie listened to recordings provided by her British colleague Emily Blunt.
- Violet's outfit changes during the donut tasting participant review. She starts in one outfit, which changes to another, and then unexpectedly returns to the original.
- During Tom's conversation with his parents at breakfast, Tom picks up a fork. In the next shot, he raises it again. His mother's drink also changes position and volume throughout breakfast.
