The Woman King

The Woman King is set in the Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1820s, where the Agojie, an elite fighting force made up entirely of women, serves as the kingdom's most feared line of defence. Their leader, General Nanisca, trains a new group of recruits while the kingdom faces pressure from the neighbouring Oyo Empire and the slave trade that sustains it. Among the newcomers is Nawi, a young woman whose independence puts her at odds with the discipline demanded of a warrior. As tensions escalate, Nanisca must prepare her soldiers for a conflict that threatens Dahomey's way of life.

Gina Prince-Bythewood directed the film, her fifth feature, following The Old Guard and arriving before Children of Blood and Bone. Viola Davis, who also produced, stars as Nanisca, with Thuso Mbedu as Nawi, Lashana Lynch as Izogie, Sheila Atim as Amenza and John Boyega as King Ghezo. Dana Stevens wrote the screenplay.

Made for about 50 million dollars, the film earned roughly 98 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.9 out of 10 from over 69,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 7.6 from more than 2,400 votes. A critics' rating of 7.8 from 274 reviews places it above the IMDb audience figure and close to the TMDB score.
