Short description
Jack Gladney teaches Hitler studies at a small American college and lives with his wife Babette and their four children from various marriages. Their comfortable, consumption-filled suburban life is upended when a railway accident sends a cloud of toxic chemicals over the town. The disaster forces Jack, who has long been preoccupied with the fear of dying, to confront his own mortality directly, while tensions within the family, including questions about Babette's secretive behaviour, come to the surface.
Noah Baumbach directed and wrote the screenplay, adapting Don DeLillo's novel. It is the twelfth of the fourteen films he has directed, following Marriage Story and preceding Jay Kelly. Adam Driver plays Jack, with Greta Gerwig as Babette, Don Cheadle as Murray Siskind, and Raffey Cassidy, Sam Nivola and May Nivola as the children. Baumbach produced with David Heyman and Uri Singer for A24, Heyday Films and NB/GG Pictures, on a budget of about 100 million dollars.
The film drew a mixed response. Critics gave it 6.5 out of 10 across 263 reviews, while audiences were less favourable, with 5.7 out of 10 on IMDb from around 48,000 votes and 5.6 out of 10 on TMDB from roughly 839 votes. The gap suggests a divide between reviewers and general viewers, and the large budget against that reception made the film a costly undertaking for its distributors.

- Jack Gladney's Panasonic radio alarm clock, played by Adam Driver, is a Panasonic brand. Don DeLillo, the screenwriter and author of the 1985 novel that served as the literary source for the screenplay, originally intended to name his novel that, but did not receive permission from the Japanese company. During the end credits, a song by LCD Soundsystem plays, during which one of the band members repeats the word Panasonic.
