Tropic Thunder
Short description
Tropic Thunder follows a group of self-absorbed Hollywood actors sent to Southeast Asia to shoot the most expensive war film ever made. When the studio cancels the production because costs have spiralled, the director decides to keep going without telling his cast, who continue to believe they are filming. Their posturing and rivalries leave them unprepared when they run into real armed men in the jungle.
Ben Stiller directed and co-wrote the film with Justin Theroux and Etan Cohen, and he leads the cast as action star Tugg Speedman. Robert Downey Jr. plays Kirk Lazarus, Jack Black plays comic actor Jeff Portnoy, Brandon T. Jackson plays rapper-turned-actor Alpa Chino and Jay Baruchel plays Kevin Sandusky. It was Stiller's fourth feature as director, arriving between Zoolander (2001) and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013).
The film had a budget of 92 million USD and took about 196 million USD worldwide, a solid return for an R-rated comedy. On IMDb and TMDB, audience ratings sit somewhat lower than the critics' rating of 7.4/10 from 249 reviews. Among the 74 credited cast and 154 credited crew, the production credits include DreamWorks Pictures, Goldcrest and Stiller's Red Hour.
What's left behind the scenes
- Tom Cruise himself suggested that his character perform a dance. Initially, there were no dances in the script.
- The twins Johnny and Luther Htoo served as the prototypes for Tran, the underage leader of the criminal group.
- The film's special effects were created at 6 different studios. There are over 500 special effects throughout the film, some of which were corrected, removed, or replaced with new ones based on the reactions of a test audience. CIS Visual Effects Group, in collaboration with Scorcher VI, prepared the trailer and twelve additional special effects for the DVD release.
- Possible translation options for the film's title in Russian distribution: “Mission: Impossible”, “Thunder in the Tropics”, and “Tropical Thunder”.
- Filming took place from July 9, 2007, in Hawaii and Los Angeles.
