All About Ah-Long

Ah-Long is a truck driver and former motorcycle racer living a hardscrabble life with his young son Porky. The two share a close bond, though their circumstances are modest. That bond is tested when a chance encounter brings Ah-Long back into contact with his former girlfriend Sylvia, a woman who left for America years earlier after a violent falling-out between them. Sylvia, now a director, is looking for a child to appear in a television commercial, and Porky is chosen for the part. What she does not know is that the boy is her own son; she had believed the child died at birth. Her return sets the story in motion as the three lives intersect again.

The 1989 Hong Kong drama was directed by Johnnie To, the second of the twenty-three films he has directed in chronological order, following Happy Ghost III and preceding Justice, My Foot!. Sylvia Chang, who plays Sylvia, also co-wrote the screenplay with Philip Cheng Chung-Tai and Ng Man-Fai. Chow Yun-fat stars as Ah-Long, with Wong Kwan-Yuen as Porky, Ng Man-tat as Dragon, Wong Tin-Lam as an advertising executive and Alan Yu Ga-Lun as Patrick Yu. The film took in about four million US dollars worldwide. On TMDB it holds a rating of 7.3 out of 10 from fifty-six votes, indicating a generally favourable response from those who have seen it.
