Hotel Transylvania
Short description
Hotel Transylvania is an animated comedy about a secluded resort built by Count Dracula in the mountains of Transylvania, where monsters can vacation far from human interference. To mark his daughter Mavis's 118th birthday, Dracula invites Frankenstein and his bride, the Mummy, the Invisible Man, a werewolf family and other guests. His plans go wrong when a young human named Jonathan wanders in and strikes up a friendship with Mavis. Eager to keep the other guests calm, Dracula disguises the intruder as a monster and tries to get rid of him while Mavis has other ideas.
The film was directed by Genndy Tartakovsky, who came from television animation and made his feature directorial debut with this film. It was written by Peter Baynham and Robert Smigel and produced by Michelle Murdocca, with a voice cast led by Adam Sandler as Dracula, Selena Gomez as Mavis, Andy Samberg as Jonathan, Kevin James as Frankenstein, Fran Drescher as Eunice and Steve Buscemi as Wayne. Roughly fifty performers are credited overall.
Released in September 2012 and running 91 minutes, the film cost about 85 million dollars to make and earned around 358 million dollars worldwide, a strong commercial result. On IMDb it rates 7 out of 10 from some 312,000 votes, and on TMDB also 7 out of 10, from about 9,400 votes. Critics were less enthusiastic, giving it 5.4 out of 10 across 141 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- The hotel address is: Romania, Umbre, Transylvania Street, house 666 (it can be seen on the back of the guidebooks that Dracula gives to guests).
- The microphone at Mavis's party is exactly the same as the one in the Oscar®-winning short film Chubb Chubs (2002). Sony Pictures Animation released the short film 10 years ago.
- A dishwashing sponge was used as the basis for creating Eunice's voluminous hairstyle.
- Wayne's watch doesn't actually show the time, but the phases of the moon.
- Among the decorations on Mavis's room wall is a poster featuring a girl who strongly resembles Selena Gomez, who voices her.
- Andy Samberg co-wrote and performed the song "Sweet 118." He recorded it in his Saturday Night Live office and played it for Michelle Murdocca over the phone during a conversation.
- The artists were inspired by a similar technique used to create Arthur's sweater in the animated film *Santa Claus' Secret Service* (2011) when creating the technology for "knitting" sweaters for George and Gina's gremlins.
- Miley Cyrus was originally set to voice Mavis, but declined to focus on other projects, and Selena Gomez took her place.
- This is the first feature film by director Genndy Tartakovsky.
